Links (and good ones, too).
Ok, yeah. It’s been a little while. But I have lots of goods to deliver in the coming week. Worry not.
To begin, here’s a bunch of great reads by people who are not me:
As always, NPR continues to lead the way in new music accessibility, streaming entire albums online. Here’s Vijay Iyer’s Historicity, The Flaming Lips’ Embryonic (notable because the blueprints for the songs on this album were created out of improvisations), and Nellie McKay’s Normal As Blueberry Pie: Her Tribute To Dorris Day (who I love). And in case you missed it, here is every submission NPR got (including mine) for the Jazz Now series, a master list of new jazz artists categorized by how often they were recommended for turning new fans on to jazz.
Elsewhere:
Howard Mandel has the beginnings of a great discussion of arts journalism here.
Peter Hum’s review of Harry Connick Jr.’s new album has the word ‘hell’ in the title.
Jason Parker has a reminder about practicing that is all to easy for us to forget, here.
Sequenza21 posted an interview Search and Restore did with guitarist Noveller, here.
And Nate Chinen has some final words on his JazzTimes interview with Wilco guitarist and “avant-garde jazz assassin” Nels Cline……….here.
Ok. As for me, I’ve been moving on the grad school stuff, and digging into a new method book (which I will post about in the coming week). Also, look for a review of one of the following albums, which I am currently listening to and enjoying immensely:
Monica Zetterlund and the Bill Evans Trio-Waltz For Debbie
Dirty Projectors-Bitte Orca
Acoustic Ladyland-Living With a Tiger
Mary Halvorson Trio-Dragon’s Head
Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson
Plus all of the above streams from NPR.
