About Me

In May I started this blog because of the blog post competition that Ethan Iverson was hosting at DTM. For my entry, I basically had a paper on Jazz that I wrote for school ready to go, and because I didn’t have to actually write anything to submit, I realized recently that this blog was created without much context going in. For those who are interested, and for those who may wonder why I always update about Columbus, Ohio (instead of say, NYC) this is a bit about me. And because I will invariably succumb to the lure of writing about myself on this blog, I will not explore the details of my existence here. Instead, I will give you the basic facts so I don’t have to explain myself to you every time I want to write about how cool I am.

Me:

(Resume)

I play the drums. I graduated from Capital University’s Conservatory with a degree in Jazz Studies in 2009, and since then have been pursuing a music career in as many veins as possible. While at Capital I was awarded the Cozy Cole Scholarship for Jazz Percussion and played in virtually every ensemble offered. Since graduating I have had the privelage of playing with some fantastic musicians, including Mark Flugge, Scott Belck, Roger Hines, Derek DiCenzo, Stan Smith, Michael Cox, Andy Woodson, and Brett Burleson. I’ve played everything from drum set (primary instrument) to taiko drums, at venues as diverse as the Columbus Art Museum and PASIC 2005. Currently, I play in the Columbus area, and teach at Capital University’s Community Music School, and the Contemporary Arts Studio. My career aspirations include playing professionally, teaching in the highest capacity possible, and writing about music or life (no fiction). Which brings me to the blog.

The Blog:

Although I’ve been living in a jazz cave for the last four years, I listen to a variety of music. This blog will probably have a jazzular slant (partially because of how desperately the genre can use whatever promotion it can get….even what little this humble blog would render), but I hope to cover my interests in other areas as well. This blog will be a combination of A. Personal experiences related to and/or inspired by music, B. Reviews and/or reflections on music that I am listening to at the moment, C. Reblogs/postings of interesting music-related material that comes my way via the inter-tron, D. Original music/photos/transcriptions for you to digest, and E. Whatever music news that is relevant to Columbus, Ohio, where I am currently located. Once in a while I might go ahead and post something on here just because I find it to be interesting, and I don’t want to take any flack for how little these occasional posts may have to do with music. This is my blog.

I hope you enjoy it.

P.S.

Please comment at will.
